Training for CompTIA Security+

Security+ tests whether you can protect an organization day to day: recognize an attack, choose the right control, monitor systems, respond to an incident and understand the policies behind it all. The training ties each concept to a decision a security team makes.

About the training

Connect specialist knowledge to practice.

Security+ tests whether you can protect an organization day to day: recognize an attack, choose the right control, monitor systems, respond to an incident and understand the policies behind it all. The training ties each concept to a decision a security team makes.

What will you learn?

  • 01

Classify a threat: And link it to the control that limits it.

  • 02

Choose architecture controls: For network, cloud and data.

  • 03

Follow response steps: From detection to lessons learned.

  • 04

Read organizational risk: In the language of policy and compliance.

Is this training right for you?

  • Work in IT support or networking: And want to move from fixing faults to protecting systems.
  • Are a computing student or graduate: Looking for a first credential that opens the security field.
  • Develop software or systems: And want to see how flaws are exploited and closed.
  • Handle IT for an organization: And own account and device security without a dedicated team.
SOC analyst
Watches alerts, separates real ones from noise and escalates.
Systems security administrator
Applies patches, permissions and hardening settings.
Incident response team member
Contains the incident, collects evidence and records events.
Identity and access administrator
Manages accounts, roles and multifactor authentication.

Topics and applications

Your training map in detail.

01

Exam SY0-701 outline · General Security Concepts · 12%

Control types and goals; Confidentiality, integrity, availability; Cryptography and keys; Change management and security

02

Exam SY0-701 outline · Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations · 22%

Threat actors and motives; Social engineering and malware; Indicators of malicious activity; Reducing the attack surface

03

Exam SY0-701 outline · Security Architecture · 18%

Cloud and segmented networks; Protecting data by its state; Resilience and backup; Matching controls to architecture

04

Exam SY0-701 outline · Security Operations · 28%

Hardening systems and devices; Identity and access management; Monitoring and alerting; Incident response and evidence

05

Exam SY0-701 outline · Security Program Management and Oversight · 20%

Governance and policies; Risk assessment and treatment; Third-party and vendor risk; Audit, compliance and awareness

06

Attacks and vulnerabilities

How attackers think, attack and malware types, reading indicators of compromise and shrinking the attack surface. An email that looks like the CFO asks for an urgent transfer.

07

Architecture and controls

Cryptography and keys, network segmentation, cloud data protection, identity and multifactor authentication. A test server is exposed to the internet with a default password.

08

Operations and governance

Monitoring and alerts, incident response steps, risk assessment, policies and vendor security. A night alert shows a successful login from an unexpected country.

How to organize your study

  • Pick the version first: SY0-701 or SY0-801, since their weights differ.
  • Start with general concepts: Controls and cryptography are the language of every domain.
  • Study attack before defense: Threats explain why each control exists.
  • Build secure architecture: Network, cloud, identity and data together.
  • Give operations its time: The heaviest domain in the current version.
  • Practice performance items: Short timed tasks, then redo what you missed.

Before applying for the credential

No mandatory prerequisites: CompTIA requires no prior credential or experience for Security+. Recommended experience: CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years of experience, not as a requirement. Choose your version: Decide whether you will sit the current SY0-701 or SY0-801 once it launches.
